Commission History – The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission was established in July 1996, in accordance with Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 40N, by a vote of the Springfield City Council. Our mission is to provide an adequate, uninterrupted, high-quality supply of water to our customers, to collect and treat wastewater, and return clean water to the environment. Board of Commissioners – The governing body of the Commission is a three-member Board of Commissioners responsible for establishing the policies and procedures for efficient water and sewer operations. They are appointed by the Mayor of Springfield and approved by the City Council. Click here to read more.

Water System – The Springfield water system dates back to 1848 when the Springfield Aqueduct Company was formed. This page contains information on the history of our water supply and a description of our water system. Click here to read more.
Sewer System – The Commission services approximately 36,400 sewer accounts. The sewer collection system consists of 138 miles of combined sewer (sewer and stormwater), 312 miles of separated sewer, 23 combined sewer overflow outfalls, 12,000 manholes, and 33 pumping stations.
