In warmer months, residents in Springfield and Ludlow may notice open hydrants in certain neighborhoods. This is known as flushing. Flushing is a regular part of our distribution maintenance. Below is an interactive map identifying where flushing is currently taking place in neighborhoods throughout Springfield and Ludlow:
What does flushing do?
Flushing that occurs as part of the Commission's "Unidirectional Flushing (UDF)" program increases flow for fire protection and improves water quality. Flushing helps reduce tuberculation, which is a roughness that forms on the inside of the pipes over decades and can reduce water flow. UDF is a cost-effective way to scour this roughness from the pipes using water under pressure. Flushing also helps improve water quality by pulling fresher water into the distribution system.
What to do when flushing occurs on your street
Customers will receive a door hanger with instructions the day before an area is scheduled for water main maintenance. During water main maintenance please do not use your water while crews are working on your street. Please do not flush toilets, run faucets, washing machines or dishwashers. Any water use may cause blockages to your household plumbing. During the maintenance process, water in the mains will become very cloudy and carry sediment as it is flushed through a fire hydrant. Please do not use water during this time. Please call customer service at 413-310-3501 if you have any further questions.
