Ludlow Reservoir

The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission is pleased to open the Ludlow Reservoir area to limited public access. Please note that this area is different from a park – it is a public drinking water supply.

Hours of Operation

The Ludlow Reservoir public access program schedule varies seasonally throughout the year. The Ludlow Reservoir is open 6 days per week, Thursday through Tuesday. The reservoir is closed on Wednesdays for maintenance activities. The Reservoir is also closed for three holidays every year: Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. The hours of operation for the Ludlow Reservoir are as follows:

Winter Season – November 1 to March 31 – 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM, Thursday – Tuesday
Spring/Summer Season – April 1 to Labor Day – 7:00 AM to 7:30 PM, Thursday – Tuesday
Fall Season – Day after Labor Day to October 31 – 7:30 AM to 6:00 PM (no entry after 5:30 PM) Thursday – Tuesday

General Rules and Regulations

Water, scenic beauty and abundant wildlife resources make Ludlow Reservoir a very special place. Please remember that the reservoir is a drinking water supply and that continued access depends upon your careful and considerate use of the land and water. Please familiarize yourself and obey these rules and regulations, which were established to maintain public health and safety and to protect the drinking water supply:

  • Park in designated areas only.
  • The parking area gate will be closed and locked promptly at the designated closing time.
  • Vehicles remaining in the parking area after closing will be towed at the owner’s expense.
  • Use the sanitary facilities provided
  • Carry In – Carry Out
  • Remove trash or any other items carried into the area
  • Observe posted restricted areas
  • Fish in designated areas only
  • Any fishing activities require a Massachusetts fishing license.
  • No firearms or weapons are allowed on or within Springfield Water and Sewer Commission lands except at times and in areas expressly designated by the Commission.
  • Access for hunting is only allowed through the Facing Rock Wildlife Management Area. Do not enter through the Commission’s public parking area.

Prohibited Activities

The following activities are prohibited for reasons of safety and public water supply protection:

  • Picnics
  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Fires, food, and cookouts
  • Skateboarding, roller blading, and scooters
  • Swimming and wading
  • Boating of any kind
  • All animals, including dogs, horses, and other pets
  • Motorized vehicles, except for handicap wheelchairs
  • Metal detectors
  • Weapons of any kind

Borden Brook Reservoir and Cobble Mountain Reservoir

Borden Brook Reservoir and Cobble Mountain Reservoir are closed to the public. No recreational activities are allowed at Borden Brook Reservoir or Cobble Mountain Reservoir, or on Commission-owned property surrounding the reservoirs with the exception of approximately ten parcels that allow specified passive recreational activities.
