The Springfield Water and Sewer Commission is excited to break ground on the new West Parish Water Treatment Plant. To help celebrate, members of the public are invited to a Public Open House at West Parish Filters Drinking Water Treatment Plant on Wednesday, October 16 from 3 to 6 PM.

Please note, the facility tour includes stairs and uneven surfaces. Kids welcome - recommended ages 5+
The public will be able to view the past, present and future of their drinking water. Facility tours will depart from the West Parish Filters Treatment Plant lobby every 15-30 minutes; last tour at approximately 5:45 PM. Tours will highlight:
- Slow Sand Filters constructed in the 1920s, that will be demolished as part of construction of the new plant
- Rapid Sand Filters constructed in 1974 – the primary filtration method used today
- Backwash Facility that was completed in 2023, which will be incorporated into the new plant
Also on display will be information about the new West Parish Water Treatment Plant, laboratory services, watershed protection, and rewarding careers in the water sector. Staff will be available to answer questions.

The Commission is offering free bus transportation to and from the Open House for those who may not be able or wish to drive.
The bus will depart from the Commission’s Operations Center located at 71 Colton Street by 3 PM and return by 6 PM.
Space is limited and reservations for seating on the bus are strongly encouraged. Attendees should arrive at the Operations Center no later than 2:45 PM.

- The bus will pick up and drop off at the Commission’s Operations Center, 71 Colton Street Springfield, MA.
- Bus attendees must arrive to the Operations Center no later than 2:45 PM. The bus departs promptly at 3PM.
- At West Parish Filters attendees will have approximately 1 hour to participate in facility tours, informational exhibits, and enjoy refreshments.
- The bus will return to the Operations Center, 71 Colton Street at approximately 5:45PM/6:00PM.

The Commission is constructing a new West Parish Water Treatment Plant to replace aging infrastructure, improve resiliency, and resolve ongoing water quality issues caused by climate change. As stewards of the region’s drinking water system the Commission initiated this generational reinvestment to ensure system reliability for decades to come.
