The Commission owns and maintains the wastewater collection system in the City of Springfield and is responsible for ensuring the system remains operational. In order to protect public health and prevent unsanitary sewer backups in homes or neighborhoods, as well as ensure reliable service, the Commission plans sewer rehabilitation projects throughout the City each year. Sewer infrastructure renewal projects are especially critical considering that approximately 24% of the City’s sewer pipes are over 100 years old.
Projects are prioritized based on data collected from the Wastewater Collection System Asset Management Program. In FY21 segments of sewer pipe will be replaced in the Forest Park and Pine Point neighborhoods as part of this year’s investments in sewer upgrades.
